ABOUT
Verde is a mobile app that does the research on eating establishments for users with alternative diets.
Roberto Izzaguire -- User Researcher, UX Design
Most food apps don't take the diets of alternative eaters into consideration when displaying search results. Considering research is done by almost all alternative eaters, how might an app be developed to easily display the information commonly needed by alternative eaters prior to going to a new eating establishment?
THE PROBLEM

THE PROCESS
Because our research was catered to a very specific user base, we wanted to make sure that our research was hyper focused and interviewed and surveyed those who fell into the category of being alternative eaters. We interviewed 8 people and surveyed 35 alternative eaters with diets that included vegan, vegetarian, keto, and pescatarian.
Understanding the User

From our interviews and survey data, we were able to build out a user persona that captured not only the essence of who our user was, but also their pain points and goals when it came to their eating out experiences.
With the combination of a user persona along with the information provided from the surveys and interviews, we were able to synthesize our user insight which then drove the direction for the core functionality of the app.
User Analysis + Insight
User Flow, Ideation + Testing
For key experiences including onboarding, the home page, and the search/result screens, we wanted to have a variety of potential solutions so my partner and I each came up with several possible solutions and then had users test each function. From these tests, we evaluated user friendliness, meaning how effortless it was for a user to be able to either go through a sequence or find specific information, and overall user experience, meaning if there were portions of the user flow that were overlooked. Based on our results we landed with the structure for our home, onboarding and search features.

Affinity Mapping

Since we found that most interviewees and survey takers already did research prior to attending eating establishments, we wanted to ensure that in the features we prioritized related to the research portion of restaurant exploration in the user flow.

Feature Iteration
THE SOLUTION
Verde takes users through an onboarding where they are able to set their dietary restriction as well as what cuisines they favor. Verde then uses this information in combination with the users location to provide curated establishment and menu options based on both diet and cuisine preference through its home, search, and map pages. Once an establishment is selected, users will be able to see information about the establishment, see what specific options the establishment has that caters to their diet and continue their research by comparing the selected establishment to another establishment giving them a tool to allow them to engage in their local food scene.
The feature I took ownership for was the compare function and was also one of the most iterated features in the application. A common complaint that came up during the interview process was the hassle that often accompanied comparing the menu of two different establishments, so my partner and I wanted to incorporate a function in the application that allowed users to compare two establishments without having to completely exit out of a search. Because of the need to display the information for multiple establishments on mobile, we got a bit creative with solutions until we landed on a solution that was both effective and easily visible.
